An important innovation being employed in this project is the integration of the much more efficient heat-the-individual technology known as infra-red heating panels. These can be powered directly by the solar system, providing a highly responsive home heating solution.

The proposed solar system's holistic approach is designed to cover the household's energy needs in all seasons, including winter, which also positions the homeowner as a forerunner in the community's conversion to greener and cleaner energy.

A thorough MCS-compliant site survey was done by our renewable energy engineer, utilizing drone technology to capture essential data and roof shading factors hence minimizing the risks prior to the project, including an electrical assessment of the project to best determine locations for inverter and battery hardware. A defining day for solar electricity generation

Brentford Fountain and Leisure Centre solar PV installation successfully generated electricity that was adequate to provide electricity for Brentford Leisure Centre and exported 0.33kW to the grid 16 July 2022. This means that Brentford Leisure Centre equipment (infrastructure) and facilities was depending solely on the electricity generated from the solar panel and was even able to simulataneously export to the national grid. The LED light installed save over 50% of energy and the ASHP provided heating to the centre. The solar PV generated was monitored with Solar Edge

Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre installation was a combination of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) - 265kW, Solar Panels - 193.5kWp and LED Lights.

A successful installation in Daventry

Solar Services Solutions installation team completed this ground mounted solar system in Daventry, Northamptonshire, England on Saturday 25/11/2023.

The temperature was 1 degree Celsius and the solar system was still generating electricity, using a 50kW solar array.

This system generated surplus electricity as it was more than his entire household needs with all appliances turned on.

The customer was very satisfied with the performance of the solar installation - this marks a brilliant achievement by SSS.

A flat-roof solar and battery storage system

At this High Wycombe site the location of garage and distance to the main house presented design issues. To carry to extra load, this eventually necessitated complex rewiring, and upgrades to fuses and application for DNO approval. On this occasion, for maximum efficiency, the inverter and battery were located in the garage.

Due to the prominence of the garage on a hill, we took the wind factor and shading factor into account in selecting the optimum angle of inclination for panels on the flat roof.

A large public sector decarbonisation scheme (PSDS) involving more than 60 large public sector complexes

In 2020 the Energy team within Hounslow Council were successful in bidding for and securing a total of £19m of funding from the Public Sector Decarbonization Scheme Grant (PSDS), for energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation project within the public sector for 32 schools (£7.7m) and 29 corporate sites (£11.3m) which include leisure centres, libraries and public halls etc, funded by Salix Finance.

What is Net Zero?

Net Zero, the main target of the 2015 Paris Agreement, is about minimising dangerous climate change by limiting global warming below 2 degrees Celsius and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. 196 parties endorsed the Paris Agreement Net Zero Framework at the COP21 conference in Paris 12th of December 2015.

The Paris Agreement Net Zero green house gas (GHG) emission after 2050 must meet the 17 sustainable goals launched in 2015 to end poverty and protect the planet.

DECARBONISATION IN THE UK HOUSING SECTOR

Homeowners are responsible for reducing carbon emissions by replacing gas boilers to meet the UK government's Net Zero target by 2050 ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/net-zero-strategy ). Gas boilers emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is detrimental to the environment and causes climate change. The UK government's Net Zero target has made various local councils in England declare a climate and environment emergency ( https://www.pledge2030.uk/councils-for-2030/ ).

The implication is that homeowners need to replace the existing gas boilers with heat pumps.

Heat pumps could be air source heat pumps (ASHP) and ground source heat pumps (GSHP).

Installation of heat pumps, be it ASHP or GSHP depends on several factors, so would require expert advice from accredited installers to correctly gauge the sizing and capacity of the heat pumps.

Solar Panel Health Check

The Requirement

This was an interesting evaluation as it was on the client's boat house. He had an existing installation on solar panels and energy consumption was 40000 kwh of electricity in a year. Solar Services Solutions were invited to carry out a health check to maximise the use of the energy being generated.

The Health Check

A fabric first evaluation was carried out inside the boat.

It was immediately evident that the inside of the boat lacked energy efficient insulation. To maximise the effectiveness of the solar panel energy generated, it was imperative the inside of the wall and floor boards needed to be insulated by applying Icynene spray foam insulation.

Since the boat navigates on a river, the Icynene would reduce the impact of pollutants, dust, mould growth, and moisture and protect against external moisture basking the boat. The Icynene spray foam will also create a cocoon effect, reduce draft, noise level and make the boat more cosy and protected.

The client was also advised to avoid docking the boat under trees and shade which will reduce the maximum output of the energy generated by the solar panels on the roof.

The output electricity generation by Solar PV considering the orientation is at maximum on the East facing roof only. During the evening, the consumers have less or no solar generation because of the sun’s orientation from the Solar PV System.

Monthly Electric bill £111.00.

Recommendation

Roof spaces have potential for South West(SW) orientation of 38 degree. The dimension of the South West facing roof is 6.20m which is at an angle to an adjacent roof space that can accommodate 4 additional Solar PV panels.

The roof space can take 10 additional Solar PV System because it is split array configuration for the Solar PV installation. The roof space has 3 spatial orientation for the solar installation.

Conclusion

The high electric bill and high annual usage of electricity is indicative of the existing Solar PV not functioning to full capacity and not professional installed by the original company.

Options Available

Solution one: battery only

The Requirement

10 solar panels were installed in 2011 and in 2016 the customer had a 3.6KW/h battery installed. They wanted to make sure they were maximising the use of their solar panel system with the battery storage.

The Health Check

We first needed to obtain his annual energy consumption from his electricity bill which was 31000KWh.

We then carried out an inspection of the solar panels to examine the state of cleanliness. It became apparent that bird droppings were on some of the solar panels closer to the chimney. Factoring the effect of shading factor on the solar panels, an immediate solution would be to recommend regular cleaning of the solar panels. This will allow full energy generation of the entire solar panel system, thereby minimising any loss of electricity.

In addition, optimising the solar panels either using Tigo optimisers or using Solar Edge would improve the consistency of the electricity generated by the individual and collective solar panels.

The site survey also showed that the orientation was 55 degrees SE. This meant the consumer had the option to install additional solar panels on the west facing roof of the property.

The financial benefit and the customers needs were taken into consideration on how best to utilise the store energy in the battery. The Samsung battery installed in 2016 has a grid share link not used by the customer. We advised them to go with a renewable energy supplier company that can trade with the energy in the battery and save more money which will be more economical to the customer.

The Requirement

This customer had 16 solar panels installed in 2011 and was still paying £158 on their electric bill every month. In a year they will be paying £1896.00 and over 10 years not even factoring the increase in energy bills and inflations the figure would rise to over £18960.00.

It was obvious that something was fundamentally wrong when visiting the client and discovering their high electric bill especially since the residents were elderly and just three of them living in the property.

The Health Check

The annual usage of electricity was found to be 10493 KWh and the unit rate of electricity was 13.685 p KWh. The client paid £6000 for the installation in 2011 and £3000 to install solar thermodynamics for the hot water. Unfortunately the company has since gone into liquidation.

We were determined to unearth this high electric bill mystery. It was likely the solar panels were not installed properly, the micro inverters were not functioning or the electricity is been tapped by an unknown source.

The health check indicated there was no battery storage system, the roof is east-west facing which warrants balancing the solar panels on two arrays. The orientation of the installed panel was 89 degrees on the east facing roof. The west facing roof had enough space to accommodate another 16 solar PV panels to capture the sun set in the evening but had none installed.

It became apparent that the installation was poorly executed.

Our recommendation, was a complete inspection of the solar panel systems to ascertain the effectiveness of the inverter and the affect of shading factors on the system. A Solar Edge inverter, battery storage system and installing more Solar PV Panels on the west facing roof will increase the electricity generated.

No doubt the consumer electric monthly electric bills will be reduced and can begin to save money for more holidays.
